Teacher Reflections

Jones praised the lesson’s ability to introduce the basic concepts surrounding criticism. She gave valuable insight into the timing of the lessons, presenting them with only minor adaptations and following the steps in sequence. Her criticisms included altering the sequence and shortening some of the steps to aid in the flow of the lesson. She also felt, along with other Learning Lab participants, that the unit needed more “physicality,” such as gesture drawing assignments and other art-making activities.

Summary:

Karen Jones and Andy Warhol Museum staff worked with the Reading Class at Ross Elementary to field test the Critical Response lesson. Jones incorporated the steps of the Critical Response lesson into a larger unit focusing on the question: “How do you think the artist was trying to portray women?” The class compared women and portraiture through various time periods. Jones used the information in this lesson, as well as additional research, to provide a richer historical context for her students’ reading comprehension. She writes in review, “The students could not understand why the art for the time period was so shocking until we discussed the culture of the ’50s and ’60s.”

Adaptations:

Jones’ elementary students were in an advanced-level class, and so used the middle and high school lesson with adapted vocabulary.
