“During Step One, the students were able to distinguish between what they knew and how they felt about an artwork as they discussed a slide presentation of Warhol’s work.”

“The students were able to put their knowledge and experience to work in the worksheets and were able to share their opinions - to have a voice.” (step 5 from the elementary section of the newsletter)

Summary:

Mario Rossero and artist educators Peter Burr and Mary Tremonte worked together with his 4th grade students to use critical response and Warhol’s work as a springboard for their Art Garden Project. This collaboration more than any of the others strayed from the original lesson plan in methodology but created very positive results in student learning.

Adaptations:

Mr. Rossero chose to focus upon Warhol’s prints, the Myth series. He used the first two steps to introduce the role of the critic and to identify tastes and biases while looking at the Myth prints. The class focused upon the vocabulary words: Pop, Myth, Icon and Critic. After these initial steps the class detoured to create plans for outdoor sculpture and installations, which would create their own stories. After the garden projects were finished Mr. Roserro came back to the last step of the lesson to aid the students in applying criticism to their own work. He adapted the form from the elementary lesson for each student to write a response and to voice their opinions
