Teacher Reflections

During Steps 3 and 4 Roebuck commented: “I believe the cultural context was more interesting to my students; they enjoyed learning about lifestyles of the 1950s. The most difficult part [for them to relate to or to fully comprehend] was the Critics Respond.”

[As they went on to analyze the research, Roebuck recorded one of her student’s observations] “One student made an observation that ‘even though de Kooning’s portrait of a Woman was not realistic it was more interesting because it made you want to look at it and to figure out what was going on; whereas Warhol’s portrait of Liz Taylor was very straight forward, you saw what you saw and that was it.’ The class discussion went very well.”

Final Silkscreen Compilation

Summary:

In the partnership, artist educator Carrie Schneider worked with art teacher Ruth Roebuck of Oliver High School and three art classes. As a part of the Learning Lab advisory committee, Roebuck had earned an extended partnership with the museum that focused on the implementation of the Critical Response Learning Lab she helped to create. During the four-month project, students visited the museum twice and were visited weekly by Schneider. Students conducted extensive research into their own tastes, biases, and intuitive responses to works of art. They studied the historical and cultural climate, artists’ statements, and critics’ interpretations of art, and they wrote their own critical responses to paintings by Andy Warhol and Willem de Kooning.

Adaptations:

Schneider and Roebuck adapted the materials and created handouts, as well as vocabulary lists to assist in student comprehension. Students created their own self-portraits using digital images of themselves and Andy Warhol's silk screening technique.
