Summary:
In 2002-03 the museum partnered with painting instructor, Mary Barr
and fifteen students from the 11th grade painting elective. The collaboration
focused on the special exhibition Americanisms:
Shaping Art and Culture in the 1950s. The project began with introductory historical lessons
on painting from 1920-1960. Students then visited the museum and critically
analyzed works from the special exhibition and the permanent collection.
Students presented and supported their interpretations using both intuitive
and formal criteria. Exploring both the artistic practice of the abstract
expressionist artists from the 40s and 50s and that of Andy Warhol
students then created artworks at Artists Image Resource (AIR). Artists
from AIR and the Warhol worked individually with each student to help
realize the student’s ideas and ambitions in print. The resulting
artworks were incredibly varied and diverse. Several students contacted
AIR after the project ended to continue making silkscreen prints and
to apply for internships over the summer. Two works from this project
were selected for exhibition in Youth Invasion.
