Teacher Reflections

“The student’s really learned a sense of being, of who they are and that they can be represented. They learned how to make art out of a lot of different media and to work together collaboratively which is not typical for them.”

“The students loved roaming the school with a tape recorder. They got to be the ‘big shots on campus’ for awhile and were afforded freedom, trust and a chance to practice their interpersonal skills”.

Summary:

Lynda Abraham-Braff and Carol Bell, teachers at Wesley Highland School, an approved private school that integrates special education and intensive behavioral health services for children diagnosed with emotional disturbances, adapted the lessons in the Collecting Unit in order to address their students’ needs and interests. Their adaptations provided an excellent opportunity for students to practice their interpersonal skills while researching their own youth culture. Students used Andy Warhol’s methods of collecting as a springboard for their own projects. They interviewed adults in their school and created various collections of voices, text and objects.

Multimedia Exhibition:
Using personal, professional, and institutional categories to guide their steps, students created a final multimedia exhibition. The exhibition featured silkscreen prints of their collected objects, an edited audio component and wooden boxes built by students for display purposes. Students conducted tours of their exhibition during an open house reception for parents and peers.
